alcohol versus gas stoves - 2007/01/08 07:30
Anyone got first hand experience of unpressurised alchol stoves? I'm looking to switch away from my temperamental and ancient paraffin stove, but am resisting going to gas. I've heard that unpressurised alcohol is clean, simple and safe, with the drawback being less hot flames and relatively expensive fuel. Any ideas? Sebastian (Shamaal II)

I have an Origo 3000 two burner alcohol stove which I installed to replace the original gas unit, having successfully used the same model Origo in my previous boat. The makers claim that each burner runs on maximum output for about four and a half hours on a full tank of fuel (about a litre). In practice, it's only on full output to bring things to the boil so I can't vouch for the figures, but a tankfull certainly seems to last for a good time. It's certainly very simple and efficient (2kw claimed output) to use and, with the fuel being held in absorbent mineral wool rather than in liquid form, a lot safer than the alternatives. Like you, I have an aversion to gas on boats.
I run the stove on methylated spirits, rather than denatured alcohol which I've never been able to source. The expensive bit is that meths is normally only sold in 500ml bottles; if you can find someone who could supply it in larger quantities I'm sure that it would be cheaper.
