propellors??? - 2008/02/10 19:08
I am having to replace my old two bladed propellor and i wondered if anybody has fitted a folding propellor / three bladed propellor?
If so is there any great improvement in sailing speed to make it worth the expense. I have a yanmar 1gm10.
PS is a folding propellor legal in our class as have enough problems with local racing as club members think my handicap is too high!!!( we win quite often!!)

Hi, I have a 3 bladed prop on my Contessa but I have a larger 2GM20 ! as a result there is minimal prop clearance with the hull which I think causes quite a bit of cavitation but it's fine for pushing the boat along at 5K+ :

I was looking to switch to a 2 bladed prop for long distance cruising, and lock it into place to reduce drag. So depending upon the diameter, let me know if you want a good home for your old prop ! (not looking for high efficiency; just something to get me in and out the marina)

Cheers

Hi Palmer

I have replaced my 3 bladed with a Darglow featherstream feathering prop as recommended by JR. I have a Yanmar 1GM10 3/4 inch shaft... and a spare 3 blade fixed prop going cheap!

I haven't had the opportunity yet to test it under sail, yet but motoring astern in the marina is more positive than with the fixed blades.

interestingly we race and when I asked for a concession for a fixed 3 blade vs a two blade prop the sailing committee said it didn't matter and wouldn't give me an allowance, they also said it didn't matter if I had a feathering prop.. so I bought one!

We shall see what transpires

Hi

I have to say after a few sails, a feathering prop is the answer .... highly recommend you talk to the nice man at Darglow about a feathering prop
