prop - 2008/12/01 00:35
we are thinking of changing our two blade for a three and was wondering if this would be alright we have a 6.5 h.p engine. but the two blade does not seem to have enough push when going into a strong headwind.I think the motor could handle it . the prop is a 10 10 lefthand thanks for any help

I changed from a 2 bladed to a 3 bladed prop for basically the same reason - ie for improved drive through a seaway.
I think there is an improvement in that respect.
What I have found is that my 1983 10 hp Arona (I doubt if it has made 10 hp in an awful long time.... and probaly struggled to make 8hp!) tends to get a lot hotter and works a lot harder to turn the 3 bladed prop.

My concerns would be whether your engine, which probaly is also quite old, may also struggle to make revs and also run a lot hotter due to the extra work.

I would say that I probably wouldn't consider going back to a 2 bladed prop but if finances allowed and I could find one that fitted in the available space then a feathering 3 bladed prop would be an attractiven upgrade.

I hope this helps

G.

props are a nightmare, listen to the podcast where i speak to the experts, if the engine is overheating that is not good, it is essential to match the prop to the gearbox and engine and the space available for the prop
