hull deck joint - 2009/04/01 09:43
I've heard several times about the hull - deck joint being a source of leaks on Contessa 26s. The problem is that I'm not exactly sure where the hull deck joint is.

My Contessa 26 (Maclan Marine) has got a continuous deck that meets the hull at the toerail. When people talk about the hull - deck joint, are they talking about gaps between the teak toerail and the deck (on one side) and the teak toerail and hull (on the other side).

I've got a gap between the teak toerail and the deck (inboard) and the hull (outboard) in places and am wondering whether I should be filling this. If so, would Sikaflex 291 be a good idea?

I'm hoping some Contessa 26 experts can help me out on this one. It would be nice to get my Contessa 26 dry (given all the other big items that are going in!).

Cheers,
Zlod / Martin

Hello Martin

The hull/deck joint is under the toe rail.

I am currently removing the toe rail on Red Admiral to inspect the hull/deck joint and have discovered one small area where the hull and deck appear to be parting.

If you really want to know what's going on under those toe rails I would suggest you remove them for inspection.

You may not thank me for this advice whilst you are doing the job but when it's all done you'll be glad you did and have peace of mind.

Guy.

Hi Guy,

Does removing the toe rail "just" entail unscrewing it? It looks like there are screws under little bits of dowel that hold the toe rail down.

It sounds from what you say that it would be a bad idea to put anything sticky (sikaflex) between the toerail and the deck (or hull) as that is going to make removing the toerail problematical in the future.

Does the hull - deck joint look something like the "diagram" below (where "t" is the toerail, "d" is the deck moulding and "h" is the hull. The diagram shows the starboard toerail)?

Code:

             tttt             dh             dh      ddddddddh              h              h              h

or this:

Code:

tttt             dh             dh      ddddddddh         hhhhhh              h              h

Cheers,
Martin

Hello Martin

That's right, small wooden plugs underneath which you will find the screws.

My toe rails also have old sealant under them, it does make removal more difficult but when they go back on I'll probably be using sikaflex or arbomast as well.

Once the job is done and they are sealed back down I'm hoping they will stay that way for many years to come.

Either diagram is accurate enough from the "what's under the toe rail" point of view.

When the two are bonded they look like one! I have a small section, no bigger than 6 inches, where it definitely looks like two!
