How to fit clutches, organisers etc to coachroof? - 2009/02/16 10:31
I want to run my main halyard, kicker, topping lift, and 2 reefing lines back to the cockpit. The bit I'm stuck on is how to mount the clutches and organisers to the coachroof as it seems to be formed of two layers of GRP with nothing in between. Any suggestions?

Hi Tony,

We fitted clutches and winches to Red Dragon three or four years ago. We drilled through from above and then opened out the holes in the headlining using a hole saw. The gap between the two layers is quite large (around 10mm) so there's plenty of space to hide the nuts and some large washers and leave a clean surface in the cabin. After three years there's no sign of cracking or other damage to the laminate, despite our best efforts with the winch handle, so it seems to be well able to take the load.

The problem is covering the holes in the headlining. Filler's no good as you may need to access the bolts later on. We solved the problem for the short term using a strip of 2" wide insulation tape. As you will have guessed, it's still there and most of the time I don't notice it.

Cheers

Ben

Ben....

....did you fit any kind of backing plate when fitting the winch? or did you just use penny washers??

I will be doing this very job this winter and would have used some form of backing plate, a disk of GRP or Ply etc.

I'm not convinced there is a need for deck organisers?!

Why not run the lines straight from the mast base?

Providing they don't interfere with one another and run to the winch in a nice straight line?!

Guy.

Hi Tony

I fitted winches and organisers to Tessa, used penny washers under the bolts, and sikaflex to stop leaks, now in fourth season without problems.
