New engine needed - any advice? - 2010/05/04 15:57
We need to replace our Nanni 9.5 HP Diesel engine and would appreciate any advice from owners who have also replaced their engines. In particular, whether to go for another Nanni? (It has been suggested that we go for the 14 HP rather than the 10 HP?) What are the key things to consider when choosing a new engine? What questions should we be asking of the marine engineers who fit the new engine? What problems should we be prepared for?! Any thoughts and advice would be welcome.

My advice would be to make sure that the bits you need to get to to service the engine are accessible in a Contessa 26. A Vetus M2.D5 has all the servicing bits on the side of the engine which is a real pain. I know: I have one!

This was something that didn't really occur to me at the time (which was stupid), but you live and learn.

Hello Joanna,

I have just had a new engine installed. I originally wanted a Yanmar 2YM15 but eventually chose a Beta 14.
This was mainly because the difference in price almost covered the installation costs. I looked also at the Nanni and the Vetus aswell but I was warned off the local Nanni supplier by several independent people and the vetus was again more expensive (I think the engine was also bigger and heavier) although the people there were extremely friendly and helpful.

The Beta and the Nanni are both based on the same Kubota engines and as such the dimensions will be very similar. In both makes the 14 hp and 10 hp engines are exactly the same except for internal differences for the different power outputs.

I replaced a 1983 vintage Arona 8 - 10 hp engine which hadn't produced anything like that kind of power for a long time. Whilst this was considerd a compact and good little engine the Beta is even more compact and even easier to access all areas. I chose the 14 model because I was fed up getting stopped in any kind of a seaway or opposing tide (and also because the head gasket blew and that was the last straw!).

Finally, the customer serice from both Beta Marine and the company that supplied and fitted the engine, A.D. Marine, have been extraordinarily good considering this is the marine industry.

I am based in Gosport.

I hope this helps.

All the best
Graeme

Hello Joanne,

Further to my last, before making any decisions, AD Marine came and did a full survey of the engine compartment. They confirmed the engine could fit (more than easily) and that (very luckily) the engine beds did not need to be changed at all. They gave a full quote for installing the engine and all the ancilliaries that they expected to be needed including a new prop shaft and exhaust system and propellor. The final bill was a less than the quote.

I would think that if you chose the Nanni or the Beta the engine beds wouldn't be a problem - this was the main concern I had had.

I should point out that when they came and did the survey/quote they knew I was going to be using a different engineer for the instalment. As it was the engineer let me down (marine industry!!!!) and they stepped in without any problem. They would have had had to inspect the installation anyway to issue the guarantee.

Thats about all I think
G.

Sequin> Is that AD Marine at Hayling Island? I was thinking of asking them to re-engine my Contessa 26. I'll be a bit miffed if I missed getting a good job done.

My experience with getting a Vetus installed was that it cost a lot more than expected, partly due to the difficulties of getting a Vetus installed at all. I think the Vetus is a good engine (and the engine itself works well). I just think that it is not the right engine for a Contessa 26.

I think Jeremy Rogers likes those Beta engines.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for the very helpful comments and advice. We have now had a good conversation with the local Beta dealer and are hoping to be back on the water before too long!
