| | Self steering vanes - 2006/09/20 09:13 Is there a suitable self steering windvane available for a Co 26. What make, price, does anyone have any experience with one? The administrator has disabled public write access. |

It all starts with the trim tab on the rudder which is connected to the vane on the stern. I couldnt live without it as I have sailed to Bermuda from Connecticut and on to the Caribbean. | | Re:Self steering vanes - 2006/10/17 20:46 Thank you for responding. It has taken a while to work out how to reply. Which boat do you have that attached to? What make is it? I am now looking at the MONITOR system which looks less bulky than some of the others. The administrator has disabled public write access. |
| | Re:Self steering vanes - 2006/10/25 21:39 You think the Monitor looks less bulky? Wah, it looks a small robot hanging off the back of the boat... Or am I looking at the wrong one?:

And at $3,895.00, what is minimum wage in the UK? Lets say £6 - I could hire a teenager to steer for 649 hours at that price! Ok, so that's only 27 days of non-stop sailing, assuming we didn't give him/her a break, but still... It's an expensive piece of hardware.
Personally I have been looking at the Neptune Windvane here:

I talked them at the Southampton boatshow, and for the Contessa they are around £1000. However, you need to figure out how the mount it on the transom, as it is too steep for their pre-made bracket... So if there is anyone out there that wants to buy one also, maybe we can get a bracket fabricated together. Two custom fabrications are always cheaper than one...

| | Re:Self steering vanes - 2006/10/29 20:46 I did visit the NEPTUNE windvane stand at the Southampton Boat Show, and was quite impressed but thought the system looked rather fragile. Maybe because there was no substantial bracket for the transom. I will have another look at the windvane next week. I contacted a welder in Lymington and am awaiting to hear how much he will charge. | | Re:Self steering vanes - 2006/11/03 21:58 David Rainsbury uses a Navik on his boat Piper and there was an article in PBO a few months ago which showed the fitting and compared a few wind vanes. The Sea Feather which is a British make got a good write-up.
I was lucky enough to pick up a secondhand Navik last summer from a chap in Liverpool YC which was in fantastic condition and included manual and spares. The Navik seems to be quite popular from the discussion threads on the www.co26.com forum. The Navik is not as heavy as the Monitor but strong enough for a circumnavigation.
I will be taking and posting some pictures after I hopefully installed the Navik over this winter.
Cheers Andrew If the memories are better than the dreams, then it's all over
