| | spinnaker downhaul deck fitting - 2010/06/07 16:54 Hi all,
Having never drilled into my coachroof, could anyone advise from their experience please:
I'm try to rig a downhaul for a spinnaker that has never been used before! I understand I need a block/U-bolt just in front of the mast for the downhaul. The downhaul as I understand takes a lot of strain.
Is it as simple as drilling through the coach roof (and the lining) and attaching a U-bolt with a backing plate? If so anybody know what size U-bolt should be used?
Are there alternatives? I have a bolt hole in my mast step, could I rig a downhaul through that instead? All my lines (uphaul included) stop at the mast (i.e. don't lead to the cockpit). Why lead the backhaul back too then?
Any help would be appreciated.

You've probably completed the job by now but if not this might be a solution if you're not looking for elegance! The system was used on an Achilles 24 (not that much smaller than a CO) and worked well for many years. Run the downhaul through one of the forward mooring cleats and back to the cockpit. Not quite Admiral's Cup stuff but saves drilling holes.

Have hooked to the mast step but not yet tried it!! However if it fails, your suggestion may come in really handy.
